Proctors, attorneys in the ecclesiastical courts, were even more hated than their secular counterparts. "Every line … that a proctor writes," one of Ben Jonson's obsessed Puritan characters says, "is a long black hair, combed out of the tail of the Antichrist" (Bartholomew Fair, 1.2.73-4).
