The Peaceful Reign of James I,
or the Benefits of his Government

The same size as The Union of the Crowns,The Peaceful Reign of James I faced the entrance. In Rubens's allegory James sits in splendor between twisted columns of the kind thought to have been used in King Solomon's temple that echo his preference for the title of the British Solomon, the Lord's supremely wise anointed. (When James died in March, 1625, Donne preached on the text "Behold King Solomon Crowned" as James lay in state, and the funeral sermon by the Bishop of Lincoln was entitled "Great Britain's Solomon.") Descending from the sky, two winged figures crown him with the laurels of victory. At his left should, holding a crown, stands a cherub. Female personifications of Peace and Plenty embrace on the left, while Minerva crushes the serpents of rebellion, types of Satan, at their feet.
