Distinguished Scots humanist, fierce opponent of Mary Stuart, and author of the elegant and influential dialogue justifying resistance to royal tyranny, De jure regni apud Scotos or The Rights of the Crown of Scotland (1579), Buchanan was a leading classicist of his day and tutored James V's bastard son. Michel de Montaigne, Mary, and her son James.
