Burghley House

The son of Northamptonshire gentry, Cecil parleyed his unique position of trust with Elizabeth into fabulous wealth represented by Burghley House in Northamptonshire. Begun 1575, soon after Elizabeth named him Lord High Treasurer, and designed like a stage set for great courtly festivities, Burghley House was one of the largest and most picturesque of Elizabethan palaces. The lively exterior consists of towers and turrets, projecting bays and oriels, and ranks of ornamented chimney pots.
