Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556), theologian and master of English prose

Cranmer was named Archbishop of Canterbury by Henry VIII in 1533 and presided over Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon, which precipitated Henry's break with Rome. Cranmer championed the Reformation in England, supporting the translation and dissemination of the Bible and overseeing and writing much of the Book of Common Prayer, which established the wording and order of the Anglican service and sacraments.
