De jure regni apud Scotos

Distinguished Scots humanist, fierce opponent of Mary Stuart, Buchanan wrote the elegant and influential dialogue justifying resistance to royal tyranny, De jure regni apud Scotos or The Rights of the Crown of Scotland (1579). Written as a dialogue between Buchanan and one of Mary' noble supporters, Buchanan, who may have written one of the sources of Macbeth and who could cite many examples of deposed Scottish kings, insisted that kings were made by the people and could be unmade by them should they turn tyrant and break the law.
