Phillippe du Duplessis-Mornay

Long thought to be the sole author of Vindiciae contra Tyrannos, Duplessis fled France after the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572 but soon returned to serve the Protestant Henri of Navarre as his chief strategist and diplomat until Henri abjured the faith to become King of France. Labeled "the Huguenot Pope" for his great influence, Duplessis led a turbulent life as a soldier and scholar, leading a mission to Queen Elizabeth and helping draft the Edict of Nantes in 1598, winning political rights and limited freedom of religion for the French Protestants.
