The Deposition of Edward II
|
|
Holding a scepter in his left hand, King Edward II surrenders his crown to his son and heir, Edward III, during his forced deposition in 1327. His turbulent reign and eventual murder were brilliantly dramatized by Shakespeare's great contemporary, Christopher Marlowe, in a play that profoundly influenced Richard II. This illustration is from Peter Langtoft's Chronicle, written during Edward's reign.
