Elizabeth with Time and Death


In her last years the Queen brooded over a restive country and the deaths of old friends. Painted after 1620, during the first revival of interest in her reign, the allegorical portrait shows Old Father Time sleeping on her right while Death looks over her left shoulder; two putti prepare to bestow an immortal crown.
