The Witch of Endor
|
|
From the frontispiece to Joseph Glanvill's Saducismus Triumphatus (1681), a work which contributed to the intellectual climate that produced the with trials in Salem, MA, in the American colonies. The frontispiece depicts the witch of Endor, a woman who called up the ghost of the prophet Samuel for King Saul of Israel in the First Book of Samuel 28:3-25. Samuel, in disguise, turned to the woman only after God ignores his pleas for help fighting the Phillistines. The witch conjured up the prophet, but Samuel condemned Saul for flouting the Lord, prophesying his doom and Israel's defeat. A terrified Saul kiled himself.
