This seventeenth-century woodcut, illustrating the ballad "The Crost Couple, or a Good Misfortune," shows how a girl got a green gown. The phrase was nearly proverbial for the consequences of a roll in the hay. Note the speechless Cupid and the worried Dryad in the tree. |
