Designed for Holbein's The Images of Death (sometimes called the "Dance of Death"), the woodcut also appeared in two separate publications, an octavo "picture Bible" bearing the title Historiarum Veteris Instrumenti Icones ad vivum expressae and a folio Vulgate Bible, Biblia utriusque Testamenti iuxta Vulgatam translationem, both published in 1538.
