Frontispiece of Raphael Holinshed, The Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland,1587 edition.
This monumental history was a source for most Shakespeare's history plays. The frontispiece features twisted columns like those believed to adorn the temple of King Solomon with interspersed clusters of grapes with ivy. The design might have been conventional; it resemles the Solomonic columns entwined with grapevines on the frontispiece to Hugh Broughton's A Concent of Scripture London, 1588.
