Title Page of the King James Bible

A new translation, commissioned by King James, replaced the Geneva Bible in 1611. The elaborate title page depicts the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. The text is set in the old-fashioned black-letter or Gothic face, while the title-page uses the Roman type that would become the norm for English books. Although enormously influential among Britih and American writers, it appeared at the end of Shakepeare's career, and he seems not to have known it at all.
