The Examination of Augustine Phillips

Phillips, one of the sharers or stockholders in the Lord Chamberlain's Men, was hailed before the court investigating what role the company's performance of Richard II, with its scene depicting the King's deposition and murder, might have played in the Earl of Essex's abortive uprising against Elizabeth in 1601. Why Phillips. apparently a musician as well as an actor, was summoned we do not know, but he apparently allayed the suspicions of the court that the Lord Chamberlain's Men were involved, and the company was never punished..
