James's Defense of Divine Right The True Law was written before James acceded to the English throne in 1603. Published in England in 1598, it aroused great interest and some fear among those Englishmen who expected he would succeed the unpopular Elizabeth for its absolutist assertion of the divine right of kings and its denial of a subject's right to resist his lawful king, no matter the cause.
